You have to take life as it happens, but you should try to make it happen the way you want to take it.
________an old German saying
Without deciding what you want from life your chances of stumbling upon what will be important to you in the future are slim to none. We need a plan and to develop skills that will provide worthy options for our needs in living like a mate, a job and spiritual fulfillment.
"Cheshire-Puss," said Alice, "would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where ___" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"___ so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "If only you walk long enough."
____________from 'Alice In Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll.
The most pleasant life is the one with the most opportunities. What most people want out of life is the opportunity to make choices so you need to give thought to acquiring some skills.
Even if you currently do not know what you want to do in the long run, you can do some things today that will ensure you will have many satisfying choices in your future. Dream a little.
Begin the process by setting some goals for yourself so you do not continue to drift aimlessly. These goals will depend on where you are in life; the beginning of a career or looking for an altogether new career for your retirement years.
Life is dynamic, fluctuating and always changing so adapt by updating skills and renewing goals regularly with the passage of time. Once you achieve a goal you need to set a new one.
Remember goals are only useful in taking us somewhere along the path you choose for yourself. Once you reach a goal it becomes a stepping stone to greater achievements you will then set for yourself.
Try thinking of your life as a long and never ending pathway stretching out in front of you. Forget the movies and novels with thier happy endings that happen when we reach a special place, such as married, rich or famous. This is not how life works. No specific goal can sustain a person for very long after it is achieved.
Always consider complexity and probabilities when making plans and realize there are no sure things. Have contingency plans if you run into too many difficulties and be aware failure is a very real possibility. Fail fast and move on.
