The Power of More

"It is our observation that every time we get into trouble it is due to not having been lazy enough.

Unhappily, we were born with a certain fund of energy.

We have been hustling about for a number of years now, and it doesn’t seem to get us anything but tribulation."

The Power of More by Marnie McBean

I'm reading a fascinating book at the moment that is written by Marnie McBean, three-time Olympic champion called "The Power of MORE"... her friend Steve Nash (LA Laker now) writes the forward.  He is from Victoria, BC and she trained there for the Olympics.

Why is it interesting?

It seems to me that women better communicate feelings and experiences (Just read Annais Nin or Collette, LOL).  Ms. McBean does a great job of telling about her training experiences - setting goals, staying motivated, working as part of a team and so on.

She has created a position for herself preparing Canadian Olympians for the Olympic experience and to maintain focus among all the hype and ceremony.  She gives talks to business people on motivation, goal setting, going the extra mile BUT she is more articulate than me.  Her book contains very little jargon and that's one thing that sets it apart from many books in this genre.  There's something in there for everybody.

The book has given me new respect for the teamwork aspect of rowing.    The need for all members of the team pulling together, literally, every stroke needs to be coordinated or the boat slows.  Marnie spends about 12 years training and learning to reach her gold medal quality.  It really surprised that so much effort is needed to work together efficiently to do a sport that ends up looking so simple and elegant.
